Prominent Ear Surgery
Prominent ears can often be the cause of teasing and bullying at school which can in turn lead to a decrease in self-confidence and under performance. An otoplasty or ear pinning surgery to reduce the appearance of prominent ears can be beneficial and lead to an increase in self-esteem.
Prominent ears have several components that are addressed during surgery. Usually, there is a prominent upper 1/3 to 2/3 of the ear, separated from the head. This area can be set back closer to the head using a unique suture technique. Other features can include a deep conchal bowl, lack of antihelix and an underdeveloped or absent ear lobe.

Get your GP to send us a referral so we can apply for a Medicare rebate for your consultation and ear surgery (special conditions apply from Medicare). Medication can be used to control swelling, numbness, and discomfort during the healing process. Dr Khan will provide more detailed post-operative instructions. The initial healing process may take between five and ten days. The results of surgery are instant, but the bandages may obscure them. We will remove the dressings from surgery in a week at our clinic.
For six weeks, you will need to wear a headband over your ears. During this time, you will be able to take a shower with the headband on. Swelling may take several months to resolve, while your incision lines may take up to a year to fade completely.
