What is Eyelid Surgery?

Also known as blepharoplasty, eyelid surgery can change the appearance of your upper or lower eyelids. Whether you are struggling with skin folds in upper and/or lower eyelids or suffer from vision problems like restriction of visual fields, Blepharoplasty may address these concerns. Blepharoplasty is a procedure that may improve the appearance of the eyelids and, in some cases, assist with concerns such as loose skin that can affect vision. The signs of ageing, as well as hereditary factors, can modify the appearance of your eyes.  You may also experience puffiness or bags under your eyes that make you look tired. This may be addressed with lower blepharoplasty, depending on individual circumstances.

Your first step to having a Blepharoplasty is to schedule an appointment with Dr Khan at West Coast Plastic Surgery. Starting from the 1st of July, 2023, it will be mandatory for all patients to obtain a referral from their General Practitioner (GP). This will additionally make you eligible to claim a Medicare rebate, though special conditions apply. Furthermore, you could potentially receive a rebate from your private health insurance provider if you meet specific criteria. These criteria will be clarified during your consultation with Dr Khan. You can expect some swelling, bruising, irritation, or discomfort during the healing process of your eyelid surgery, which can be managed with medication, cold compresses, and ointments. Until the swelling has subsided, you should keep your head elevated and wear sunglasses for protection. Dr Khan will provide you with specific instructions for blepharoplasty aftercare following the surgery. The initial wound healing may take 5-10 days. After this time, you are free to return to work and to wear contact lenses. You can conceal any remaining bruising or redness while the healing process takes several weeks.

Generally, you should see your final results after a few weeks. For your incision lines to fade completely, it could take up to one year. Certain eyelid conditions can be fixed permanently by surgery, but you will naturally age. To maintain your results, you should always wear dark-tinted sunglasses and use sun protection until the scars mature. As a result of your surgery, your upper and/or lower eyelids should appear smooth and firm while giving you a more youthful appearance.

On the day of the procedure, you’ll arrive at our comfortable, state-of-the-art facility. After you’ve been checked in and prepared for surgery, Dr Khan will again discuss the procedure with you, ensuring that you are completely comfortable and ready to proceed.

Blepharoplasty can be performed under local or general anaesthesia, based on the extent of the procedure and your personal preference. If the upper eyelid is being addressed, Dr Khan will make a precise incision within the natural crease of the eyelid. This approach hides the scar effectively once healed. If the lower eyelid is being treated, the incision is typically made just below the lash line or inside the lower eyelid, ensuring any scarring remains concealed. Through these incisions, Dr Khan will carefully remove or reposition excess fat and remove surplus skin as needed. The incisions are then closed with fine sutures to minimise any potential scarring.

The procedure typically takes 1-2 hours, depending on whether both upper and lower eyelids are being addressed. Following the eyelid surgery recovery itself, you’ll be monitored in our recovery area until you’re ready to be discharged with comprehensive post-operative care instructions.

Following your Blepharoplasty procedure, it’s normal to experience some degree of swelling, bruising, and mild discomfort. These symptoms typically peak within the first 48 hours and then gradually subside over the next 10-14 days. Dr Khan will provide pain management medication to ensure your comfort during this initial recovery phase. You will also be given specific post-operative care instructions, which will include how to care for your eyes, medications to apply or take orally, and when to follow up with Dr Khan. It’s important to keep your eyes well-lubricated and protected from sunlight during this time. Cold compresses can also help reduce swelling and discomfort.

Most patients feel ready to return to their normal daily activities, including work, within 7-10 days post-surgery. However, any strenuous activities, including heavy lifting, rigorous exercise, and swimming, should be avoided for at least 4 weeks to facilitate the healing process. It’s important to remember that while the majority of swelling and bruising will have resolved within the first few weeks, the final result of your Blepharoplasty can take several months to fully materialise. This timeline allows for the complete resolution of swelling and the settling of your tissues into their new contours.
