What is Eyelid Surgery?

Also known as blepharoplasty, eyelid surgery can change the appearance of your upper or lower eyelids. Whether you are struggling with skin folds in upper and/or lower eyelids or suffer from vision problems like restriction of visual fields, Blepharoplasty may address these concerns. Blepharoplasty is a procedure that may improve the appearance of the eyelids and, in some cases, assist with concerns such as loose skin that can affect vision. The signs of ageing, as well as hereditary factors, can modify the appearance of your eyes.  You may also experience puffiness or bags under your eyes that make you look tired. This may be addressed with lower blepharoplasty, depending on individual circumstances.

The following conditions are treated by eyelid surgery or blepharoplasty:

  • Redundant upper eyelid skin that creases or obstructs the eyelid’s natural contour.
  • Extra skin hanging from the upper eyelid, which may impair vision.
  • Upper eyelid puffiness caused by excess fatty deposits.
  • Under-eye bags
  • Excess skin folds or rhytids

Starting from the 1st of July, 2023, it will be mandatory for all patients to obtain a referral from their General Practitioner (GP). This will additionally make you eligible to claim a Medicare rebate, though special conditions apply. Furthermore, you could potentially receive a rebate from your private health insurance provider if you meet specific criteria. These criteria will be clarified during your consultation with Dr Khan. You can also contact us by phone at 0862303041 or by fax at 0862303042. Alternatively, you can send an email to admin@wcps.au. Someone from the team will get in touch with you to book your appointment and answer any questions you may have.

You can expect some swelling, bruising, irritation, or discomfort during the healing process of your eyelid surgery, which can be managed with medication, cold compresses, and ointments. Until the swelling has subsided, you should keep your head elevated and wear sunglasses for protection. Dr Khan will provide you with specific instructions for blepharoplasty aftercare following the surgery. The initial wound healing may take 5-10 days. After this time, you are free to return to work and to wear contact lenses. You can conceal any remaining bruising or redness while the healing process takes several weeks.

Generally, you should see your final results after a few weeks. For your incision lines to fade completely, it could take up to one year. Certain eyelid conditions can be fixed permanently by surgery, but you will naturally age. To maintain your results, you should always wear dark-tinted sunglasses and use sun protection until the scars mature. As a result of your surgery, your upper and/or lower eyelids should appear smooth and firm while giving you a more youthful appearance.

The cost of Blepharoplasty varies, as it is influenced by several factors. Each procedure is tailored to meet the individual’s unique needs and aesthetic goals, which means no two surgeries will have the same cost. Elements that can affect the cost include the complexity of your case, whether the surgery is being performed on the upper eyelids, lower eyelids, or both, and whether the procedure is combined with other treatments.

Moreover, other costs that factor into the overall cost of the surgery include the anaesthesia fees, surgical facility costs, and any necessary medical tests. During your consultation with Dr Khan, a personalised treatment plan will be developed that considers these factors. You will be provided with a detailed cost breakdown that reflects your specific treatment plan to ensure transparency and no hidden surprises.

Potential Benefits of Blepharoplasty

Choosing to undergo Blepharoplasty at West Coast Plastic Surgery offers an array of benefits. We’ve listed some of the most significant advantages that our patients frequently report:

Improved Visibility

Excess skin folds in the upper eyelids hanging over the eyelid margin can restrict field of vision. This improvement can make reading easier and driving safer.

Enhanced Appearance

Excess skin, puffiness, or under-eye bags can make you look tired or older than you feel. By addressing these issues, Blepharoplasty rejuvenates natural skin lines and your overall facial appearance, providing a fresher, more youthful look. This procedure can take years off your face, and the results are typically natural-looking and harmonious.

Increased Self-Confidence

One of the most rewarding benefits of Blepharoplasty is the boost in self-confidence that comes with feeling better about your appearance. When you love how you look, it shows. Many patients report feeling more outgoing, confident, and comfortable in their skin post-procedure.

Long-Lasting Results

Blepharoplasty offers long-lasting, even permanent results for many patients. While it doesn’t stop the ageing process, it can set back the clock significantly. By maintaining a healthy lifestyle and proper skincare regimen, you can enjoy your youthful and vibrant eyes for many years to come.

Understanding Blepharoplasty

In a Blepharoplasty, excess eyelid skin, fat, and muscle are carefully removed or repositioned from the upper or lower eyelids, or in some cases, both. This helps rectify a range of conditions such as drooping skin around eyelids, under-eye bags, or puffiness and rhytids around the eyes. The procedure may help address concerns related to excess skin or tissue around the eyes, though outcomes vary between individuals.

The procedure itself can be performed under local or general anaesthesia, depending on the patient’s preference and overall health status. It’s an outpatient procedure, meaning you can typically go home the same day, following a brief period of observation post-surgery.

However, as with any surgical procedure, Blepharoplasty requires a high level of surgical precision and a deep understanding of facial aesthetics. The eyes are a defining feature of the face, and any changes made need to be in harmony with the rest of your features. This is why it’s so crucial to select an experienced surgeon like Dr Khan. Dr Qadir Khan is a RACS-trained plastic surgeon with extensive experience in performing brow lift and is committed to providing high standards of care and expertise. He understands the delicate intricacies of the human eye and uses this knowledge to guide his surgical approach, keeping patient safety and satisfaction at the forefront of his practice. Dr Khan takes the time to understand each patient’s unique facial structure and cosmetic goals, designing a personalised surgical plan that aligns with their expectations.

If you are considering blepharoplasty, please schedule a consultation to discuss how this procedure may be suitable for your individual circumstances.

What Conditions Can Blepharoplasty Treat?

Blepharoplasty is a versatile surgical procedure that can address a variety of conditions related to the eyelids. Here’s a list of conditions that Blepharoplasty can effectively treat:

  • Excess Skin on the Upper Eyelids (Dermatochalasis): Aging, and sometimes genetic factors, can cause the skin of the upper eyelids to lose its elasticity, leading to a heavy, hooded appearance. Blepharoplasty can remove this excess skin.
  • Under-Eye Bags and Puffiness: Aging can also lead to the fat pads under your eyes becoming more prominent, resulting in under-eye bags. Similarly, fluid accumulation or fat herniation can cause lower eyelid puffiness. Both these conditions can be effectively treated with lower eyelid surgery/ blepharoplasty.
  • Rhytids and Fine Lines Around the Eyes: Blepharoplasty can also address signs of aging like crow’s feet and fine lines around the eyes.
  • Uneven or Asymmetrical Eyelids: Whether due to genetics, aging, or trauma, Blepharoplasty can be used to correct asymmetry, ensuring your eyelids match and enhance your overall facial balance.

Blepharoplasty Procedure: An Overview

Initial Consultation

Your journey begins with an initial consultation with Dr Khan, where we will discuss your goals and the potential outcomes of blepharoplasty. This meeting will help determine a personalised surgical plan, tailored to your needs and ensuring realistic expectations for the procedure.

During the consultation, Dr Khan will discuss your medical history, current health status, and any medications you’re taking to ensure your suitability for the procedure. He will also conduct a thorough examination of your eye area to evaluate your skin quality, eyelid symmetry, muscle tone, and eye health. These steps are crucial in assessing your individual needs and an appropriate surgical procedure or invasive procedure to achieve optimal results. Beyond this clinical evaluation, the consultation is also your opportunity to share your aesthetic goals and concerns. Dr Khan will take the time to understand what you hope to achieve with the Blepharoplasty, ensuring that the proposed treatment plan aligns with your vision. Following this, Dr Khan will explain the details of the Blepharoplasty procedure, potential risks, and the expected recovery process. You will have the chance to ask any questions you may have, enabling you to make an informed decision about your treatment.

We understand that undergoing any surgical procedure is a big decision, and our goal at West Coast Plastic Surgery is to provide you with all the necessary information and support to make this journey as smooth and comfortable as possible.

On the day of the procedure, you’ll arrive at our comfortable, state-of-the-art facility. After you’ve been checked in and prepared for surgery, Dr Khan will again discuss the procedure with you, ensuring that you are completely comfortable and ready to proceed.

Blepharoplasty can be performed under local or general anaesthesia, based on the extent of the procedure and your personal preference. If the upper eyelid is being addressed, Dr Khan will make a precise incision within the natural crease of the eyelid. This approach hides the scar effectively once healed. If the lower eyelid is being treated, the incision is typically made just below the lash line or inside the lower eyelid, ensuring any scarring remains concealed. Through these incisions, Dr Khan will carefully remove or reposition excess fat and remove surplus skin as needed. The incisions are then closed with fine sutures to minimise any potential scarring.

The procedure typically takes 1-2 hours, depending on whether both upper and lower eyelids are being addressed. Following the eyelid surgery recovery itself, you’ll be monitored in our recovery area until you’re ready to be discharged with comprehensive post-operative care instructions.

The recovery process is an integral part of your Blepharoplasty journey, and at West Coast Plastic Surgery, we’re committed to making this period as comfortable and efficient as possible for you.

Following your Blepharoplasty procedure, it’s normal to experience some degree of swelling, bruising, and mild discomfort. These symptoms typically peak within the first 48 hours and then gradually subside over the next 10-14 days. Dr Khan will provide pain management medication to ensure your comfort during this initial recovery phase. You will also be given specific post-operative care instructions, which will include how to care for your eyes, medications to apply or take orally, and when to follow up with Dr Khan. It’s important to keep your eyes well-lubricated and protected from sunlight during this time. Cold compresses can also help reduce swelling and discomfort.

Most patients feel ready to return to their normal daily activities, including work, within 7-10 days post-surgery. However, any strenuous activities, including heavy lifting, rigorous exercise, and swimming, should be avoided for at least 4 weeks to facilitate the healing process. It’s important to remember that while the majority of swelling and bruising will have resolved within the first few weeks, the final result of your Blepharoplasty can take several months to fully materialise. This timeline allows for the complete resolution of swelling and the settling of your tissues into their new contours.

Risks & Complications

As with any surgical procedure, Blepharoplasty carries some risks. These can include infection, bleeding, dry eyes, difficulty closing the eyes, double vision, visible scarring, and asymmetry. However, under the skilled and experienced hands of Dr Khan, every effort is made to minimise these risks. It’s important to discuss any concerns you have with Dr Khan during your consultation, so he can fully explain the measures taken to ensure your safety.
