Led by Specialist Plastic Surgeon Dr Qadir Khan (FRACS)
Have you experienced swelling in your wrist, hand, or fingers that comes and goes? A ganglion cyst may be the cause. It is the most common benign mass in the hands. The problem can originate from the joint lining or the tendon sheath. It is often asymptomatic. Only about 1 in 10 patients have a history of trauma. The lesions are usually harmless and can be located anywhere on the hand, but most commonly develop on the back of the wrist.
Your first step to Ganglion surgery is to schedule an appointment with Dr Khan at West Coast Plastic Surgery. Get your GP to send us a referral to apply for a Medicare rebate for your consultation (special conditions apply from Medicare). You can also contact us by phone at 0862303041 or by fax at 0862303042. Alternatively, you can send an email to admin@wcps.au. You will be contacted by a team member to book your appointment, and you can ask any questions you may have.
It usually takes us 10-14 days to remove the sutures at our clinic. Depending on where the cyst is located, absorbable sutures might be used instead. The surgical wound will initially be dressed. Following suture removal, you may need to see a hand therapist to do some hand exercises. Return to work will vary based on your job duties. Upon discharge, Dr Khan will provide you with specific post-op instructions.
Your hand will be covered with a large bulky dressing, and you will need to keep it dry while your incision is closed.
Whether you get a local or general anaesthetic, you can go home on the same day. After your hand is operated, you should not lift anything for two weeks to ensure proper healing. The stitches are removed by your doctor or nurse two weeks after surgery. The first follow up appointment with your specialist will be in two to six weeks after surgery so that your hand can be assessed for sensation and movement.
