Trigger finger results when a flexor tendon in your palm or finger catches on a pulley when in a flexed position and cannot be extended without the help of the other hand. A common condition that can be disabling, trigger finger can be caused by a diseased pulley or a swollen tendon.
At intervals, pulleys keep the tendons in place by tunnelling through ligaments that run along the bone. Trigger finger straightens with the snap of a finger, like pulling and releasing a gun trigger.
The diagnosis of trigger finger is typically made based on clinical evaluation. However, in some cases, further tests such as an ultrasound may be required.
Your first step to having a Trigger Finger surgery is to schedule an appointment with Dr Khan at West Coast Plastic Surgery. Get your GP to send us a referral to apply for a Medicare rebate for your consultation (special conditions apply from Medicare). You can also contact us by phone at 0862303041 or by fax at 0862303042. Alternatively, you can send an email to admin@wcps.au. You will be by a team member to book your appointment, and you can ask any questions you may have.
It is typical to have 2 – 3 stitches per incision, and a large bulky dressing will be applied. You will be required to keep this dressing dry. The sutures will be removed in 10-14 days. Your surgical wound will have a dressing for the first few days. Depending on your condition, you may need to see a hand therapist after removing the sutures. Depending on your line of work, you may be able to go back to work afterwards. You can expect to be discharged from the hospital shortly after returning to the ward following this procedure. To heal properly, you cannot lift anything with your operated hand for two weeks. After six weeks from your surgery, you will meet with your surgeon, who will examine your wound, finger movement, and sensation.
