Melanoma is skin cancer development in the melanocytes, cells that make melanin, the dark pigment in our skin. UV exposure, previous history of skin cancer or melanoma, family history of melanoma, lighter skin colour, light hair colour, immunosuppression, and dysplastic and congenital nevi are just a few of the risk factors.
Melanoma has more metastatic potential than other types of skin cancers. A small melanoma, commonly mistaken for a mole, can be more likely to spread to other body parts if it has increased thickness, which can be difficult to judge on a visual inspection alone. Thus, if you have a newly identified pigmented lesion, you should seek medical attention immediately
Your first step to having reconstructive surgery due to melanoma is to schedule an appointment with Dr Khan at West Coast Plastic Surgery. Get your GP to send us a referral to apply for a Medicare rebate for your consultation (special conditions apply from Medicare). You can also contact us by phone at 0862303041 or by fax at 0862303042 for melanoma removal. Alternatively, you can send an email to admin@wcps.au. You will be contacted by a member of our team to book your appointment, and you can ask any questions you may have.
Following surgery to remove melanoma, recovery is usually quick, but it is crucial to keep wounds clean to avoid infection risk. If you notice bleeding, swelling, wound dehiscence, singns of infection like pus, redness around the wound or fever, after surgery, you should inform the doctor.
The doctor will prescribe pain relievers if necessary and let you know when to resume your normal activities. It is possible for the area around the wide incision to feel sore and sensitive for a couple of days. In a few weeks, this area will clear, and the redness will go away. In most cases, recovery takes two to three weeks. Depending on the extent of surgery and the degree of melanoma, the recovery time will vary.
